THE MOST IMPORTANT IDEAL IN LIFE IS SECURITY
Security allows you to feel safe secure and relaxed knowing that your family and possessions are safe.
Reduce your risk of burglary.
Every home owner is advised to carry out a home Burglary Risk Assessment this can be included in their HIPS (home information pack) and this in turn can be used as a basis for Insurance premium reduction and as a benefit when selling the house.
The home security survey should begin by standing outside the property and looking at the house though the eyes of a burglar. If you can see a way in then so can they.
Firstly see if there are any concealed areas at the front intruders like to hide while breaking into your house, overgrown plants bushes and trees can all act as shields from observant neighbours. At night look for dark areas and if there are any street lights illuminating your house and garden.
Tip 1 You may consider fitting automatic flood lights.
Secondly carry out the same procedure in the rear and or side garden and appraise the fencing, intruders can often access your property via a neighbours garden or side road.
Can an intruder walk around your house they will always look for an easy way in. Make sure there is a gate or fence to prevent this.
Tip 2 a simple hasp & staple and padlock will secure most gates.
It is easy to forget sheds and garages when in fact there is often thousands of pounds of gardening equipment and tools (tools which can be used to break into your house).
Tip 3 wall and ground anchors can be used with steel locking cables to secure bikes and lawn mowers.
Is your principal entrance door fitted with an Insurance approved lock? (some isurance companies insist one is fitted) A British Standard BS3621 for wooden doors or similar quality for UPVC or aluminium doors.
All other doors fitted with at least good quality locking bolts fitted at the top and bottom.
Next all the ground floor and easily accessible first floor window should be secured with a key operated locking device (window lock)
Tip 4 it is a good cost saving to screw up any seldom or unused windows.
Do you have an alarm system with a visible bell box fitted at the front and rear of the property.
Tip 5 a dummy bell box can act as a good deterrent.
CCTV complete with a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) will further enhance your security.
Finally a safe fitted inside the property to lock away any valuables passports etc. intruders do not usually carry the tools to be able to open a safe.
All these steps reduce your risk of being successfully burgled.
